About Autism...

What Is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects one in 100 people across the world. It is a condition which means sufferers have trouble communicating and relating to the world around them, an ability which is so often taken for granted. People with Autism find it difficult to relate to others in a meaningful way and often lack stable relationships. They may not understand social cues and may have difficulty with imagination and flexible thinking. Many people with autism find sensory experiences difficult, where loud noises, lights, or sensations may cause great distress.

The effects of Autism make life more difficult, frightening and often confusing for those struggling to make their way in a busy and confusing world. More severe sufferers of autism may lack all non-verbal skills and use sign language, PECS and other forms of communication to express their needs.

Living With Autism

Though there is no ‘cure’ for Autism, research and history shows that life can be made easier with the right support. The Wessex Autistic Society seeks to provide this support and tailors its services around the needs of the individual throughout childhood and adulthood.
